Mature Students

If you are 19 years of age or older before the beginning of classes and you do not have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or its equivalent, you may apply as a mature student.

It’s Never Too Late to Start Your Education

Please note that mature student applicants must meet any specific entry requirements of the program to which they are applying; refer to the individual program descriptions for additional admission requirements.

All mature student applications are considered individually; assessment to determine readiness for college studies may be required. An interview may also be necessary. Students who do not possess the admission requirements from their academic transcripts will be required to complete a mature student assessment to determine their readiness for college studies.

Mature Student Assessment

Cambrian College offers a series of standardized tests. The results will help determine each student’s academic ability to pursue career-oriented college studies. This assessment is called the Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT). These assessment tests are standardized paper-and-pencil, multiple-choice tests; each topic has from 22 to 70 questions. Test results are valid for one year. These assessments cover English and math only; students requiring sciences or other subjects as part of the program requirements are encouraged to contact Upgrading.

Each student must pay a test fee prior to testing.  Payment is made in person at the Enrolment Centre using cheque, money order, or Interac. Once payment is received, each student must book an appointment to write the CAAT. For test scheduling information and booking of appointments, please call 705-566-8101, extension 7560, or visit the Test Centre in Room 3522A (Barrydowne Campus).

Please note that the CAAT is not applicable to limited enrolment programs.

Mature student assessments will be evaluated as soon as possible by Admission staff, and candidates will be contacted by the Admissions Office with their assessment results. Students who demonstrate readiness will be advised on the next steps in the admissions process. If the assessment indicates there are any gaps or deficiencies in math or English, they will be provided with further options from our Upgrading/Intake Officer at that time.
