Cambrian Joins the Conversation on Mental Illness

Posted on Thursday February 7, 2013

Cambrian College will be joining the national conversation about mental illness as part of Bell Let’s Talk Day on Tuesday, February 12. Through a variety of activities, student, staff, and faculty volunteers will be encouraging everyone to learn more and to talk about mental illness to counteract the stigma attached to this pervasive yet misunderstood health concern.

“One in five Canadians will directly experience mental illness, and the remaining four will have a close friend or family member who’s affected,” said Rachel Gillespie, Director of Cambrian’s Glenn Crombie Centre for Student Support. “On Bell Let’s Talk Day, our volunteers will be engaging the campus community in discussions about mental illness and where to find help to overcome challenges. We’ll be talking about how we define mental health and how we can maintain it; and we’re reaching out to others, so that people understand that Cambrian is a safe place to talk about mental illness, and that no one needs to suffer in silence.”

The Glenn Crombie Centre provides services, like free counselling, to students with mental health challenges, exceptionalities, and a range of disabilities. It also houses the Northern Ontario Assessment and Research Centre (NOARC), where researchers study learning challenges faced by students, including the impact of mental health issues that may affect their ability to succeed academically in postsecondary studies.

On February 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., students from the College’s Social Services Worker program, counsellors from the Glenn Crombie Centre, members of the Students’ Administrative Council, Elders from the Wabnode Centre for Aboriginal Services and other staff and student volunteers will be hosting information booths, playing thought-provoking videos, and offering support. Cambrian’s Residence has also organized evening activities for students living on campus.
