Cambrian Opens Downtown Studio Space

Posted on Thursday April 18, 2013

Cambrian College has established a vital new artistic presence in the city’s downtown. The College’s Open Studio, located at 93 Cedar Street, was unveiled at a grand opening on April 18, featuring its premiere exhibit, Field Notes.

"We’re excited to introduce this dynamic new studio space, in the heart of the city, with such an amazing display of work from students in Cambrian’s Animation, Art and Design Fundamentals, and Graphic Design programs," said Ron Beltrame, Coordinator of Cambrian’s Graphic Design program. "Field Notes is our 11th annual graduating student exhibition, and it’s a perfect fit for our Open Studio launch. Open studios encourage artistic expression and collaboration, and our show celebrates the steps that lead to creative thinking; the messy, unrefined parts; the research; the tools; the mistakes; the entire process. It’s going to expose the public to what goes in to each craft, and what it takes to achieve a finished project."

Cambrian’s Open Studio adds 1,200 square feet of new instructional and community space to the downtown, bringing artists together throughout the year to collaborate and inspire one another. It will also be a venue for other events, like alumni gatherings, and student exhibitions and shows. "Opening this space is part of Cambrian’s plan to bring new learning opportunities, infuse vitality, and create more connections in Sudbury’s burgeoning downtown," explained President Sylvia Barnard. "The Open Studio opens the doors to downtown classes, increasing inter-disciplinary, professional, and industry collaboration across all program areas. It offers endless possibilities, and it’s the beginning of something great for students, professors, staff, and alumni." The Open Studio will also enhance students’ 4D Learning experience, since it will offer hands-on opportunities for them to learn about mounting and curating exhibits, art promotion, and marketing.
