Cambrian College’s Board of Governors today announced that Peter Lawlor has been chosen as the College’s fifth President. He will replace Sylvia Barnard, who will be retiring in June 2013 after serving 11 years as President. Mr. Lawlor will assume the presidency on July 1, 2013.
Mr. Lawlor is the Dean, School of Trades at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and a respected leader who has extensive business and postsecondary experience. In his current portfolio, he serves over 10,000 students in more than 30 programs at NAIT.
Board Chair Roger Emdin said that the Board is extremely pleased to be able to welcome Mr. Lawlor to Cambrian and to Sudbury. “The College’s next President is a visionary leader who has proven ability to translate ideas into action. He has extensive experience in academia both as an administrator and a teacher. He also has experience in business as an owner and entrepreneur. He believes that success is achieved by working for and with people. We look forward to working with Mr. Lawlor and helping Cambrian achieve new levels of success.”
Mr. Lawlor’s leadership skills have been augmented by his roles on provincial and national boards. He is currently the President of Skills Canada, Alberta, a position that underscores his personal passion for student success and life-long learning.
“Cambrian’s Board of Governors was impressed by the breadth and depth of Mr. Lawlor’s experience and by his demonstrated ability to develop and promote a strong, creative environment that enables innovation,” said Emdin. “He emerged from a pool of potential candidates as the best person to lead the College as it approaches its 50th anniversary in the Ontario college system. We are confident that Mr. Lawlor will continue to advance our position as a leader in postsecondary education through the support of the Cambrian community and our many community partners. He is assuming the helm in an era of challenges and opportunities, and we are confident that Mr. Lawlor is the best choice for this vital role.”
In accepting his role as President of Cambrian College, Mr. Lawlor said, “I am excited about working with an enthusiastic and dedicated team. Together, we can continue to provide an exceptional and relevant learning experience for our students and a skilled and knowledgeable recruitment pool for employers. I am impressed by the impact that the College and its faculty, staff and students have on the economic and social profile of the communities the College serves, and I am looking forward to helping shape this impact. We have an exciting future ahead of us.”
Today’s announcement follows an intensive search process that began in September 2012 immediately after President Sylvia Barnard announced her decision to retire.
Board Chair Roger Emdin thanked President Barnard for her commitment to Cambrian College and her success in driving change and providing exceptional educational opportunities for students for the past 11 years.
