Cambrian Competes at National Skills Competition, Earns Provincial Medals

Posted on Tuesday June 18, 2013

Cambrian College’s John Lussier has returned from Vancouver and the annual Skills Canada National Competition with an amazing experience under his belt. From June 5 to 8, he competed among the top skilled trades and technology students and apprentices in the country, enhancing his profile as a heavy equipment technician.

The National Competition is an Olympic-style event organized by Skills Canada that brings together hundreds of top students to compete in more than 40 trade and technology disciplines. Judges from industry score the competitors on a number of timed tasks covering the scope of their respective trade. At the national level, Lussier put forth an outstanding effort, narrowly missing the podium.

In May, Lussier earned a gold medal in Heavy Equipment Service at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition, which allowed him to advance to the national competition.

Lussier said that his competition experiences were second-to-none, and that the training has made him an even better tradesperson. “I spent many hours in the heavy equipment shop, preparing to compete,” he said. “It’s all about using the right approach and doing the job properly within the timeframe allowed. I learned all of that in my program, but I think the training pushed me to go over and above.”

Cambrian College sent 11 students to the provincial competition in Waterloo. Each one of them performed admirably, and five earned medals:

  • Gold – Johnathan Lussier – Heavy Equipment Service
  • Silver – Damien Lafrancois – Industrial Mechanic Millwright
  • Silver – Joshua Marshall IT and Network Support
  • Bronze – Jeff Cloutier – Welding
  • Bronze – Ryan Letourneau – Automation and Control

Cambrian is extremely proud of the students’ efforts and of the faculty members who instructed, coached, and mentored them along the way.
The College is also pleased to thank a number of industry partners that generously sponsored the team’s participation:

  • Platinum sponsors – Schneider Electric, Royal Tire
  • Silver sponsor – Kerr Smart Energy
  • Bronze sponsors – Airco, Northern Air ClimateCare, TML Supply Company, City Welding, and Metex Manufacturing

“Cambrian’s success at the provincial and national skills competitions is because of the drive, determination, intelligence, and focus of our students and faculty,” said President Sylvia Barnard. “To prepare for these competitions, our professors impart knowledge and expertise, and they emphasize discipline and technique. To succeed, students from a range of trades and technology programs must harness all of their skills and experience, and we’re very proud of their results. The students’ success is a testament to Cambrian’s top-notch programs and to our ongoing commitment to excellence.”

To assist trades and technology students who participate in the provincial and national skills competitions, the Cambrian Foundation has established a bursary. You may donate by visiting: http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?registrationID=1301435&langPref=en-CA
