Cambrian President Honours Outstanding Employees

Posted on Wednesday June 12, 2013

Cambrian College President Sylvia Barnard paid tribute to the Cambrian community on June 6 at the College's annual faculty and staff recognition event, known as Rendezvous. At the gathering, Barnard presented the President's Awards for Excellence in the Administrator, Faculty (officially presented at Convocation), Support Staff, and Team categories. Retiring employees, and those celebrating 25, 30 and 35 years of service, were also honoured.

The President's Award for Excellence recognizes employees who have been exemplary in their efforts to not only achieve their own professional goals, but to inspire other members of the Cambrian community to set and achieve the highest standards. The following individuals and team are recipients of this year's awards:

Administrator – Annie Sauve-Szydziak

Annie Sauve-Szydziak, the Manager of Health and Safety and Facilities Services is a 1989 Cambrian graduate and has been a College employee since 1992. Known for her exemplary project and people skills, Sauve-Szydziak's team was responsible for significant renovations to academic and student services space and for the "facelift" at the College's main campus this past year. Despite overseeing a demanding portfolio, she still manages to serve on a number of committees and continuously updates her skills through courses and workshops. Sauve-Szydziak also encourages growth and development among the members of her team, who describe her as a supportive and responsive manager. Her dedication and professionalism make her an important part of Cambrian's management team and a deserving recipient of a President's Award for Excellence.

Faculty – Cynthia Booth

Cynthia Booth is a dynamic and innovative professor who takes a personal interest in her students' success and always finds new opportunities to maximize their learning experience. She volunteers countless hours to College committees and to community organizations such as the IODE, Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer, and the Relay for Life. Equally important, she actively recruits students to volunteer with these organizations, teaching them valuable lessons about the benefits of serving in the community. An exemplary faculty member, Cynthia demonstrates outstanding commitment to her students, the College, and the community. Her energy, enthusiasm, and positive attitude all inspire those around her, making her a worthy recipient of the President's Award for Excellence.

Support Staff – Barbara Pontes and Bob Dubreuil

Barbara Pontes is a Disability Advisor who has been with the College since 1984. As a member of Cambrian's disability services team, Pontes' current caseload includes more than 300 students. She always goes above and beyond to empower and inspire each one of them, helping them to overcome challenges and realize their full potential. Outside of her client contact role, Pontes provides valuable input on local and provincial committees. She also works with teachers, guidance counsellors, parents and students to help them take advantage of the many services that the Glenn Crombie Centre for Student Support offers. A natural leader, Pontes has earned the respect and admiration of students and peers. Her thoughtful nature, empathy, communication skills, and passion for helping others set a high standard, making her a deserving recipient of the President's Award for Excellence.

Bob Dubreuil

Bob Dubreuil is considered the College's in-house maintenance expert. A plumber by trade, Dubreuil is known for his outstanding work ethic, his sense of humour, and his ability to get jobs done quickly and efficiently so that staff and students are not inconvenienced or adversely affected. A Cambrian employee for the past 29 years, he possesses vast knowledge and an outstanding ability to deliver innovative solutions. His peers turn to him for advice on a regular basis and his managers appreciate his positive attitude and the high quality of his work. Dubreuil is a positive role model who provides a steady stream of ideas and suggestions to improve processes in the maintenance area. He regularly takes courses to keep his skills current. As a reliable, focused, team player, Dubreuil is known as a pleasure to work with, and that is among the many reasons that he is being recognized with the President's Award for Excellence.

Team

The faculty and staff of Cambrian's Dental programs demonstrate passion and commitment to quality education, oral health promotion, service learning and philanthropy through a number of recent and ongoing initiatives. The team has received awards and accolades for its annual Walk for a Smile, which raises funds for oral health care products and services that assist vulnerable citizens locally. Globally, the team's volunteer work in Vietnam earned the program and the College national recognition and funding to support future philanthropic initiatives. The trip to Vietnam involved faculty and students who fundraised and travelled to Sapa to promote oral health and provide hands-on oral hygiene education to children living in remote mountain villages. In February 2013, faculty, staff and students in the Dental programs also offered Sudbury's first free community oral hygiene clinic, volunteering along with other local professionals. The faculty and staff of Cambrian's Dental program deliver top-quality education while inspiring others. Strong public advocacy efforts, commitment to education, and voluntarism are all hallmarks of the Dental team at Cambrian – an outstanding group that understands and demonstrates all that can be accomplished when passionate people work together.
