Cambrian College’s Health Sciences and Emergency Services Graduates Excel in Professional Exams

Posted on Tuesday September 24, 2013

Graduates of Cambrian’s Paramedic program have achieved a 100% pass rate for the ninth consecutive year in standard industry exams. This year, they are joined by graduates from the Dental Assisting program who have also achieved a 100% pass rate.

For many postsecondary students, graduation ensures entry into their chosen profession or trade.  For others, the successful completion of a professional exam is the crucial final step that allows graduates to legally practice in their field and to gain membership in the regulatory bodies that guide their work.

“Cambrian’s Health Sciences and Emergency Services students achieve consistently high pass rates on their qualification exams,” said Sonia Del Missier, Vice President, Academic.  “Their success speaks to the calibre of our programs and to the commitment of Cambrian faculty and staff in ensuring the success of our students and a smooth transition from college into to practice.”

“Both the Paramedic and Dental Assisting programs are nationally accredited, which allows graduates to write the required exams immediately following the completion of their academic study,” explained Dan Draper, Dean of the Schools of Health Sciences and Emergency Services.  “The exams are demanding but prove that our graduates have the knowledge and skills for careers in high-demand fields.”

Paramedic students were tested on overall competencies, professional and ethical knowledge, critical thinking, and skills application. Dental Assisting students were tested on their knowledge of dental sciences, clinical support procedures, client records, client care procedures, professional issues, practice management, and laboratory and preventive procedures.

Cambrian’s Medical Laboratory Technology graduates achieved a 91 percent pass rate on their national certification exams, which is above the national average. The College’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates are also being lauded for achieving an 83 percent pass rate, which is higher than the provincial average, on the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) registration exam. Graduates of Cambrian’s Practical Nursing program scored a 97 percent pass rate on their CNO exam, which is the highest among Ontario colleges.
