The Cambrian College Varsity Athletics department is pleased to announce the hiring of Luc Giroux as the new head coach of the Golden Shield men’s basketball team.
Giroux is a familiar face on the local basketball scene, having coached at both the elementary and secondary school level, with numerous championships to his credit while serving as Physical Education Program Leader at Collège Notre-Dame for the past 17 years.
He has also served as both president and vice-president of the Sudbury District Secondary School Athletic Association and has convened multiple sports over the years, including track and field, soccer, cross-country running, tennis and basketball.
“I think that it was time to do something a little different,” stated Giroux late last week. “It was time to ‘re-challenge’ myself.”
A father of two (Eric and Pascale) postsecondary students, Giroux understands that the coaching position at Cambrian requires an individual who is structured, knowledgeable and patient, three of his greatest assets, in his opinion.
“Cambrian can be both an academic and athletic option,” said Giroux. “I think it starts with stability in the program. Hopefully, this will be a positive season and we can use it as a stepping stone for next season. I’m looking at it as building a foundation.”
The Cambrian basketball men will open the 2014-2015 season on the road, facing the Humber Hawks on both November 1-2, then heading to Sault Ste. Marie one week later and welcoming the Fanshawe Falcons for their home opener on November 15.
