Posted on Wednesday February 18, 2015

The Cambrian Golden Shield women’s volleyball team garnered the sixth and final playoff seeding in the OCAA West Division with a record of 8-10, ending the season with a split in their final two home matches of the year.

This placement now pits the Cambrian ladies against the Canadore Panthers of North Bay, third in the East with a record of 13-5. Meanwhile, the Golden Shield closed out the regular season campaign on their home court, welcoming the Redeemer Royals and Conestoga Condors to Sudbury.

On Saturday, Redeemer spotted Cambrian an opening set loss before stringing together three straight wins, upending the Golden Shield 15-25, 25-18, 25-19 25-21. Charlene De Vries recorded a game-high 11 kills to lead the way for the Royals, while the Cambrian trio, Hayley Chisholm (7), Kelsey Watson (5) and Sara Charlton (4) countered with some kills of their own.

On Sunday, the local crew needed a fifth and deciding set in order to ground the Condors, posting 25-22, 25-19, 26-28, 22-25, 15-13 victories over the 4-14 non-playoff team. Amanda Kring (11) and Chisholm (10) both hit double digits in kills for Cambrian, with Watson and Charlton adding seven and five respectively

After missing the playoffs in their first season of play in the OCAA West (2013-2014), the Golden Shield will have their work cut out for them in order to advance to the provincials at Redeemer in Hamilton from February 26 to 28.

Cambrian and Canadore are set to tangle on Saturday, February 21 at 6 p.m. in North Bay. For further information, contact Tim Yu at 705-566-8101, ext. 7450, or email tim.yu@cambrianinternational.ca.
