Energy Day at Cambrian College to Generate Awareness of Conservation Benefits

Posted on Tuesday March 24, 2015

SUDBURY – On Thursday, March 26, Cambrian College and Honeywell will host Energy Day at Cambrian’s Barrydowne campus. The event will promote energy conservation, encourage participation in Earth Hour (March 28), and provide updates about the College’s continuing collaboration with Honeywell, which is reducing energy consumption and operational costs on campus.

From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., students, staff, faculty, and members of the community are invited to visit the Honeywell booth at the College’s front entrance to learn about best practices in energy conservation, register for Earth Hour, self-propel a generator, and enter to win a bicycle.

Energy Day is part of the College’s broader Energy Management program awarded to Honeywell in 2013. The program includes infrastructure and building upgrades designed to save energy and reduce the College’s operating costs. It will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 446 tons/year, which is equivalent to removing 149 cars from the road.

Some of the changes have also made the campus more comfortable, with the addition of energy-efficient lighting, heating and cooling upgrades, low-flow lavatory fixtures that conserve water, and weather sealing on roofs, windows and doors, which prevents air infiltration.

“Our agreement with Honeywell is the beginning of a long-term plan to upgrade Cambrian’s facilities and operate the College in an environmentally-sustainable way,” said President Bill Best. “This program reinforces Cambrian as a progressive, environmentally-responsible institution that attracts like-minded students and employees.”

The Energy Management program will generate $249,000 in annual energy and operational savings, guaranteed over a 15-year period. As part of the College’s agreement with Honeywell, the program cost is offset by energy and operational savings, with no infusion of capital funds.

“Honeywell’s energy management programs have helped post-secondary institutions across the country implement improvements without adding cost,” said Luis Rodrigues, Vice President, Honeywell Energy Services Group, Canada. “We are proud to team with Cambrian College and applaud the College’s leadership for their vision of a more sustainable campus for future generations.”
