On Monday, Sept. 14, Cambrian College will launch a robust, sustained initiative that aims to reduce and ultimately prevent sexual assault and sexual violence within the campus community. Safe at Cambrian will raise awareness about the issues, policies, protocols, supports, and services at the College and in the community through ongoing training, presentations, and a new website: safe.cambrianinternational.ca. This initiative follows the release of Cambrian’s stand-alone sexual assault and sexual violence policy and protocol, which was implemented in March.
On Monday morning, students are invited to attend a presentation with renowned researcher and educator, Steve Thompson, who is one of America’s leading experts on sexual aggression. He has delivered more than 1,500 presentations dealing with sexual assault, stalking, relationship violence, workplace violence, and harassment. Staff and faculty will attend a mandatory session with Thompson in the afternoon. As this is a sensitive subject, a counsellor will be present during the presentations to provide support.
Activities, workshops, and information booths will continue on campus all week, and the safe.cambrianinternational.ca website will be promoted as a resource for students, faculty, and staff year-round. Staff will also be trained to teach other members of the campus community about what bystanders can do to effectively reduce and prevent sexual assault and sexual violence.
“I urge all members of the College community to review the policy and protocol to learn about options and resources available to those who require support or who wish to support others,” said Cambrian College President Bill Best. “Each one of us has a responsibility to ensure that Cambrian remains a safe and positive space where members of our community feel able to work, learn, and express themselves in a safe environment.”
