SUDBURY – One of northern Ontario’s busiest airports is benefiting from an exciting injection of art, thanks to a dedicated group of students, faculty and alumni from Cambrian College’s School of Creative Arts and Design.

On Thursday, April 28, a 47 foot by 5 foot mural was unveiled in the Greater Sudbury Airport’s baggage screening area, enhancing the space with vibrant colours and positive energy.

“The mural adds a new element to the Airport’s atmosphere,” said Terra Glabb, Business Development Director at the Greater Sudbury Airport. “The art brings an energizing, dynamic feel that our and travellers will remember and appreciate. This mural will have an impact for years to come, thanks to its creators,” Glabb continued.

“Our design is inspired by the emotional and physical experience of flight,” explained project coordinator Johanna Westby, a professor in Cambrian College’s School of Creative Arts and Design. “Working on the piece, we used vibrant colours and typography to evoke feelings associated with the experience of travel, new horizons and connections,” she added.

The mural was created by Graphic Design students Angel Charette, Maggie Hobbs, Bianca Lefevbre, Lindsay Levesque, Danielle Provencher, and Manon Roussel; Graphic Design graduate Joelle Beaulieu; Design and Visual Arts students Darlene Benoit, Curtis Brownell, and Sarah Woodcock; and faculty members Chantal Abdel-Nour and Johanna Westby. In all, the group spent 195 hours painting the panels, which were donated by Home Depot. The students raised funds for the paint and volunteered their time to complete the project.

The Airport mural is the fifth philanthropic mural installation completed by Cambrian students, faculty and alumni. Their other projects have benefitted the Sudbury YMCA, Science North, Health Sciences North, and Cambrian College. The group seeks out locations for their murals that will be highly visible and will positively benefit the community.
