Local students explore and compete in Let’s Talk Science Challenge

Posted on Tuesday May 10, 2016

SUDBURY — More than 80 Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from Sudbury-area schools will unite to explore, discover and compete at the Let’s Talk Science Challenge on Thursday, May 12. The event is hosted at Cambrian College by Let’s Talk Science, an award-winning national charitable youth development organization.

The Let’s Talk Science Challenge is a fun, team-based competitive event that ignites students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and invites them to develop and apply their knowledge, teamwork, leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a fun learning experience. With more than 70 percent of Canadian jobs demanding STEM knowledge or expertise by the time these students graduate, Let’s Talk Science is helping to prepare youth to live and work in an increasingly scientific world through this event and its other innovative education programs.

The Let’s Talk Science Challenge features special presentations, a quiz-show component and a hands-on engineering design challenge that many students have been preparing for since January. Let’s Talk Science organizes and runs the event with student volunteers, as well as faculty and staff at Cambrian College, as part of its national Let’s Talk Science Outreach program.

Cambrian College is one of 23 colleges and universities across Canada hosting the Let’s Talk Science Challenge in April and May. This year, more than 3,200 students will participate in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge coast to coast.

Through its free programs, Let’s Talk Science supports science literacy by engaging students in STEM from Kindergarten to Grade 12.  Let’s Talk Science expressed its thanks to  CH2M, The Government of Canada, Honda Canada Foundation, Shaw (media partner), The Trottier Family Foundation, 3M Canada, The Government of Ontario and HSBC Bank Canada for making the 2016 Let’s Talk Science Challenge possible!
