Soccer players encouraged to try out for Golden Shield

SUDBURY—Cambrian College’s men’s and women’s soccer coaches, players, and prospects are on the pitch this week, preparing for the 2016-17 varsity season. Coaches are using a combination of open try-outs and training camps well before classes begin to build the strongest possible teams.

“We encourage everyone who is coming to Cambrian and considering playing varsity soccer to drop by and meet us,” said Giuseppe Politi, Head Coach for both teams.  “We’re happy to answer questions. We let players know what to expect, and we tell them what is expected from them as varsity athletes representing the Golden Shield.”

Prospective players should be on the field as soon as possible, but because some have not yet moved to Sudbury, it’s possible to join the team after the official try-out period ends September 1. Training camps and try-outs will be taking place this week and next week.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams are aiming for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) finals this season. In 2014-15, the women’s team won bronze at the provincial championships, finishing fourth in 2015-16. The men’s team reached the provincial semi-finals last season.

Dates: August 23-26, 29-31, Sept. 1
Time: 6 - 7:30 p.m. (women’s training camp & try-outs)
7:30 - 9 p.m. (men’s training camp & try-outs)
