Business students benefit from Cambrian-Laurentian pathway

Posted on Thursday April 13, 2017

Clear pathways and guaranteed transfer credits are making it beneficial for business students to study at Cambrian College and Laurentian University, by bringing them more choice, value, and exposure to additional academic and real-world experiences as they blend college and university business education.

Thanks to an agreement between Cambrian and Laurentian, students in Cambrian’s Business diploma programs won’t need to choose between college or university; instead, they can choose both and earn both a college diploma and Laurentian’s Bachelor of Business Administration degree in a little more than four years, or a little more than five years, if they graduate with an advanced diploma at Cambrian first.

“Agreements like this mean that students don’t have to choose between college and university; they can choose both and broaden their experience, contacts, and networks by choosing programs that are complementary and offer them excellent value,” said Jean Brown, Cambrian College’s Vice President, Academic.

Business student Kaitlyn McDonald is expanding her postsecondary education and career prospects through an agreement between Cambrian College and Laurentian University.

Kaitlyn McDonald graduated from Cambrian College in 2016 with a three-year advanced diploma in Business Administration. Thanks to the agreement between the two Sudbury postsecondary institutions, McDonald will be able to complete her Bachelor degree in Business Administration from Laurentian in mid-2018.

Originally from North Bay, McDonald is continuing her education at the degree level to expand her career options and to delve deeper into project management, a subject that she was introduced to at Cambrian, and for which she has developed a keen interest.

“Initially, I thought that I would like to specialize in human resources, but once I learned about project management and operations management, my focus shifted,” said McDonald.  “My professors at Cambrian sparked my interest in these fields, and I’m enjoying the courses at Laurentian as well,” McDonald explained.

For her, the opportunities to explore different aspects of business in college and university is extremely valuable, and she is confident that this will give her a competitive edge in the job market.

To further their education and employment options, students often transfer from college to university or choose to pursue college certificates or diplomas after university. Having clear pathways ensures that they can plan their education and customize it to suit their interests, goals, and objectives.

Cambrian Business professor Marnie Staffen said that students who enter the Laurentian University Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program “go in confident, well-prepared, and ready to meet the challenges of BBA life.”
