SUDBURY – At its 49th annual Convocation ceremonies, Cambrian College honoured Greater Sudbury Police Service Constable Nihad Hasanefendic with its Alumni Award. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to Cambrian College and to society through professional excellence and extraordinary service to education.
Hasanefendic is a 2005 Police Foundations graduate who consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty as a school resource officer and a police constable to assist the community and the College.
He participates in the Greater Sudbury Police Service’s Intercultural Ride Along Program, which pairs international students with officers to build trust, and to bridge cultural and social differences. Many of Cambrian’s international students benefit from this initiative and have forged positive relationships with Hasanefendic, who speaks four languages and is originally from Sarajevo. He emigrated to Canada during the Balkan war.
Hasanefendic also coordinated a charity hockey game to raise funds to support a bursary for Cambrian students in law and justice-related programs, and he organized an annual “Courage to Stand” run for high school students to combat bullying.
Hasanefendic is an inspiration to Cambrian College students, staff, and graduates who want to make a positive difference. Cambrian is proud of its more than 50,000 alumni, and is particularly appreciative of those whose outstanding careers and community service may inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
