Countdown on for OCAA Women’s Soccer Championships Oct. 26-28

Posted on Friday October 20, 2017

Cambrian College is rallying around its women’s soccer team as athletes and coaches prepare for their greatest challenge of the year: competing for a medal in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial championships in their hometown.

The Golden Shield women’s soccer team is ranked 3rd in Ontario and 9th in Canada as they enter the 2017 BelairDirect OCAA Women’s Soccer Championship in Sudbury with an 8-2-0 regular season record. The team has podium experience, earning provincial bronze medals in 2016 and 2014.

The Golden Shield’s first championship game takes place on Thursday, October 26 at 6 p.m. at the James Jerome Sports Complex, on Centennial Drive.

What to watch:

  • There has been a goal explosion in OCAA women's soccer, with the previous single-season record of 20 being surpassed by three different players over the span of two seasons. Cambrian's Tiffany Johnson (Val Caron), is the current OCAA scoring leader with 21 regular season goals. She also holds the OCAA record for goals in a season (28) and career goals (62). Johnson scored 83 goals in her four-year career with the Golden Shield. Source: OCAA and Cambrian Athletic Association
  • Cambrian’s roster showcases northern Ontario talent, with a few players coming from southern Ontario. The team’s success demonstrates that athletes benefit from high-calibre coaching and long-term player development in Greater Sudbury.

The OCAA will post the schedule, results, and show a livestream broadcast at
