SUDBURY, ON – “How are you doing?” It’s a question Cambrian College is inviting students and staff to ask themselves and others, and take the time to listen.

This is Wellness Week at Cambrian College, and a number of events have been planned to encourage everyone in the Cambrian family to nurture their own well-being and the well-being of others.

“Wellness Week at Cambrian is a time for our students and staff to connect and have fun – while learning more about mental wellness, resiliency and the supports we have available for  mental Illness,” says Alison De Luisa, Cambrian’s Associate Vice President of Student and Employee Development.  “We have put together a wonderful schedule of events that promote the importance of emotional, physical and mental well-being.”

One of the highlights of Wellness Week at Cambrian is a talk on Tuesday by Alanna LaHay, a Cambrian graduate and President of the Cambrian Athletic Association. LaHay’s father died by suicide while she was attending Cambrian. She will share her story of courage and resilience.

“Losing my dad tragically while I was still in school was the most difficult experience I’ve ever had. I didn’t know whether I would be able to return to complete my final year. I had wonderful people in my program, my workplace, and my family to talk to and confide in – and it made all the difference. I want to encourage students that they are not alone, in their darkest moments there are people who do care, and will listen. In order to change the stigma around mental health, we all have to be a part of the conversation.”
On Wednesday, January 31, Bell Let’s Talk Day, award-winning performance poet Shaney Koyczan will be at Cambrian College for a special session just for students and staff. Koyczan is a mental health advocate who performed at the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
