SUDBURY – Cambrian College’s performance and reputation for applied research are growing. Cambrian has climbed to 22nd overall on the list of Canada’s top 50 research colleges, up 15 places from last year. Cambrian also ranks 2nd overall for growth in applied research income, and 3rd among mid-sized colleges for paid student researchers.
The list is compiled every year by Re$earch Infosource, a research and consulting firm specializing in colleges, universities, and hospitals. It ranks colleges by research income generated during the previous year. Cambrian’s research activity in 2017 was valued at $3.2 million, up 73 per cent from the previous year’s total of $1.85 million.
“This is amazing news,” says Cambrian College President Bill Best. “This steady climb up the rankings proves we are becoming a ‘go to’ destination for applied research that finds solutions to real-world, real-time challenges facing industry. We have students coming to Cambrian specifically for this programming and we have industry lining up to partner with us because we have great resources and faculty. It is improving the student experience and helping us champion innovation, which are both key priorities in our Strategic Plan.”
This is the eighth year in a row Cambrian College has made the list of Canada’s Top 50 research colleges. During that time, Cambrian has launched 71 research projects worth approximately $12 million, involving 135 private sector companies and 191 students.
This past year, students and faculty partnered with industry on projects across various industries, including mining, environmental rehabilitation, agriculture, and food processing.
“Together we’re building partnerships, innovation capacity and enhancing skills development,” says Mike Commito, Cambrian’s Director of Applied Research.
“We’re seeing the creation of new products and sometimes exponential improvement on current practices. The research done here is being applied directly to industry. It is broadening the skills of our faculty and some of our students taking part in research are being hired the moment they graduate. It’s amazing what we are doing here at Cambrian and we’re being recognized for it.”
