Cambrian Dental Students Support Oral Health Month

Posted on Wednesday March 27, 2019

SUDBURY – April is National Oral Health Month, and Dental students at Cambrian College are doing their part to make sure people have healthy teeth, especially children and youth.

Students in the Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs are taking part in two initiatives next month to promote oral health.

Throughout April, students will be working in the college’s community Dental Clinic, offering free dental services for children, 18 years old and under. Services provided by Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students, under the supervision of licensed dentists and registered dental hygienists, include:

  • Dental examinations
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Fluoride treatments
  • X-rays
  • Oral hygiene instruction
  • Athletic mouth guards
  • Pit and fissure sealants
  • Nutritional counselling

“Every year, we see hundreds of people in our community, particularly children and youth, and provide them with safe, professional dental care, “says Lisa Kelly, a Professor and Clinical Coordinator in Cambrian’s Dental Health programs. “Our clients get first-rate care, and our students get to practice what they learn in a true clinical setting. It also promotes oral health in our community.”

The Dental Clinic is located at Cambrian’s main campus on Barrydowne Road. Appointments can be made through April and May. To book an appointment, call (705) 524-7366 or e-mail

Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene students will also hold their annual Walk For A Smile event, April 5th, to raise awareness and money for oral hygiene in Greater Sudbury. Proceeds from Walk For A Smile will be used to buy oral hygiene supplies for the community and provide access to dental care services. Students have set a goal of $5,000 for this year’s event.

“Every year, our students look forward to this event, because they are very community-minded and passionate about good oral hygiene, “adds Nancy Rose, Community Lead Professor in Cambrian’s Dental Hygiene program. “Cost shouldn’t be a barrier to someone having a healthy smile.”

Donations of $20 or more to Walk for A Smile are tax deductible.
