Cambrian Gears Up for September Semester

Posted on Friday August 30, 2019

SUDBURY — It’s the rite of each fall at Cambrian College: rolling out the burgundy carpet to welcome new and returning students for the September semester.

International Student Orientation begins today, Move-In Weekend starts Friday, and Orientation Week gets underway after the Labour Day Monday. Hundreds of students are expected to move into their Residence rooms over the weekend.

“Move-In Weekend is a very exciting and life-changing time for our new students as we welcome them into their Residence homes,” says Courtney Rivard, Cambrian’s Special Events Administrative Assistant. “We try to make it fun and easy, with a team of about 70 student ambassadors and many Cambrian volunteers who are helping their fellow students get settled.”

One of those student ambassadors, or Orientation Leaders is Maria Villa, a second-year Public Relations student from Columbia.

"I remember the first day I moved into residence: I was scared and confused, but an O Leader helped me and made me feel welcome, at home. Today, I want to help students that are going through the same situation as I was, and be the person that makes them feel at home. That is why I want to be an O Leader.”

A number of events are planned for Orientation Week. They include a pep rally, with greetings from College President Bill Best and Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger, a special Meet and Greet reception in the main courtyard complete with a BBQ, live music, and activities, academic orientation sessions, and special teachings and ceremonies from the Wabnobe Centre for Indigenous Student Services. Orientation Week will conclude Saturday afternoon with the season opening matches for the Cambrian Golden Shield Men’s and Women’s soccer teams.

“I always wonder how we could top how great last year was on campus,” says Cambrian President Bill Best “But then I find myself saying that every September. Our amazing faculty and staff are so dedicated to making sure the Cambrian experience is a great one that every year it just gets better and better.”
