In just over a minute into their season opening game, Cambrian rookie Sarah Cholewinsky netted her team’s first goal. It was a sign of things to come, both for the Golden Shield women, as well as their overwhelmed opponents.

By the time the dust settled on Sunday afternoon, the Cambrian ladies had registered lopsided victories by scores of 10-0 over the Fleming Knights and 12-0 against the Loyalist Lancers, clearly serving notice that they wish to contend with the likes of Algonquin, Humber and St. Clair this year.

Tiffany Johnson kicked things off with a four goal performance on Saturday, adding six more opposite the Lancers. Clarissa McArthur netted back to back hat-tricks, and Cholewinsky finished with four goals in all, while solo efforts came courtesy of Morgan Melnek and Tamara Johnson.

The goaltending tandem of Megan Coutu and Megan Smith kept things clean at their end of the pitch, with the Sudbury girls combining for the shutout versus Fleming, and Coutu going the distance on Sunday.

“Based on following the stats of other teams in the league, we wanted to push for goals today just to keep our goal differential up to par,” said Politi. “I'm glad the girls were able to create a lot of quality chances and finish them.”

“Again, we were able to rotate players and try a few things. We'll take a day off, video after that, and prepare for the big match on home turf on versus the defending provincial champs, Algonquin."

Cambrian will welcome the Algonquin Thunder to New Sudbury for a contest that kicks off Saturday at noon, hosting the St Lawrence Vikings the next day, same time.
