ShareABook_Poster 2017 Students and faculty from Cambrian College’s Early Childhood Education and Upgrading programs will be collecting, sorting, and distributing new and gently used books for the Share a Book campaign, which kicked off on Family Literacy Day (January 27) and will wrap up on March 2.

The campaign puts donated children’s books in the hands of children and families and promotes reading aloud, which is the single most important activity leading to language development and early literacy.

Faculty and students introduced the initiative at a media conference on January 27. Dan Xilon from the Sudbury Food Bank was among the speakers, as the Food Bank will help to coordinate distribution of the books to children and families in need.

From January 27 to March 2, six branches of the Greater Sudbury Public Library will act as drop-off points for the public to bring in book donations. Book bins for donations are available at the following branches: Main (downtown on Mackenzie St.), New Sudbury, South End, Valley East, Chelmsford, and Lively. Books will also be accepted at Cambrian’s Enrolment Centre, located at the front entrance of the College’s Barrydowne campus.

Since 2010, the Share a Book campaign has put more than 10,000 donated books in the hands of local children and families, giving them an opportunity to spend time together, share knowledge, and build language and vocabulary skills.
